What Are Dental Fillings?
Dental fillings are the best option for treating teeth that have been infected by minor-to-moderate tooth decay. Dr. Marwa Forest or Dr. Keith Schulhof will remove the damaged enamel, clean your tooth, and replace the enamel with a dental composite or metal amalgam material. This restores your smile and your bite, and helps you avoid further complications. The benefits of dental fillings include:
Do I Need A Filling?
Dental fillings are only recommended when your tooth has been damaged by a cavity (tooth decay). When left untreated, tooth decay can lead to serious complications like a tooth infection, which could result in the loss of your tooth. That’s why it’s important to get help right away if you think that you may need a filling.
The most common sign that you need a filling is increased sensitivity to hot and cold foods, or to the pressure of chewing. As your enamel weakens, your tooth may become more sensitive to these things. You may also notice pain and discomfort when eating extremely sugary foods.
You may even be able to do a visual inspection of your tooth, in some cases, and look for signs of decay. Using a hand mirror, for example, may allow you to look at your front and rear teeth. The most common signs of decay include black or brown stains on one or more of your teeth, or visible pitting or holes on the surface of the teeth.
A dentist should examine your mouth to ensure that you actually have a cavity, so you should definitely schedule a consultation at Mint Dental if you notice any visual signs of tooth decay, or any of the other symptoms listed above.
What’s The Difference Between Composite & Amalgam Fillings?
Composite fillings are tooth-colored, so they do not discolor your teeth when they’re applied. They are made of a special blend of crushed glass and dental resin, and are designed to match your teeth perfectly. They provide a very strong hold and require the removal of less enamel during the preparation process. Composite fillings are often used for treating cavities in front teeth.
Amalgam fillings are made of a blend of metals which usually consist of mercury, silver, copper, and tin, among others. They are extremely strong and durable. They are not brittle, unlike composite fillings, making them ideal for filling the rear molars, which experience a lot of stress while chewing. However, amalgam fillings do discolor the tooth slightly, and require the removal of more tooth enamel during the preparation process.
Depending on the location of your cavity and your personal preferences, either type of filling may be right for you. Contact us now for an appointment. Dr. Marwa Forest or Dr. Keith Schulhof can discuss each option in further detail, and help you decide on the right treatment for your cavity.
